San Benito, Texas Names Heavin Resaca Trail To Honor Benefactors
A much anticipated walking-and-recreation area in San Benito, Texas, the home of Ideas In Action, was recently named in honor of the Heavin family. The popular public attraction along the city’s resaca waterfront was officially named the Heavin Resaca Trail during ceremonies held on Dec. 7, 2006, at the San Benito Municipal Building. The city commission voted to name the project to honor the Heavin family as a gesture of appreciation for their pledge of a $350,000 endowment. The gift facilitates the construction of the project and upgrades the proposed amphitheatre. David and Glenna Heavin, founders of Ideas In Action and Gary and Diane Heavin, founders of Curves International, made the gift to the city through their respective family foundations. The amphitheatre will be named the W. H. Heavin Amphitheatre in memory of David and Gary’s father.
When completed, the 2.76 mile, asphalt-surfaced walking/jogging trail system will include the following amenities:

David and Glenna Heavin awarded inaugural Freddy Fender Humanitarian Award
On June 2, 2007, David and Glenna Heavin, co-founders of Ideas In Action, received one of only three prestigious Freddy Fender Humanitarian Awards. Created to celebrate the life of an American music legend and South Texas icon, the 1st Annual Freddy Fender Humanitarian Award Ceremony was a night to honor those individuals, organizations and corporations that went “above and beyond the call” of their communities in the area of philanthropy, service, or a special cause. David and Glenna were nominated for the honor as a result of their selfless donations of time and capital to their community of San Benito, Texas – their home as well as the world headquarters for Ideas In Action. Much like Freddy Fender, David and Glenna have pursued the dream of a better life for themselves and their family – all the while staying true to their beginnings.
The award ceremony was held on Los Ebanos Preserve, a nature park outside San Benito that boasts 82-acres of butterfly-friendly garden, trails and tropical landscaping, including many varieties of palms. Those that attended this event were treated to the company of special guests Domingo Samudio, better known in the music world as Sam the Sham, and Tejano recording legend Little Joe of Little Joe y La Familia.
In announcing the award, presenter Bill Elliott told those gathered, “This is a fitting tribute to a deserving couple. Freddy never forgot his hometown, and continued to support it and its residents. Like Freddy, David and Glenna continue to support their adopted hometown by giving of their talent, time and resources. Like Freddy, they truly love San Benito.”
All proceeds of the event go to benefit local literacy and education efforts. |
